yardspreaderLawns grow best when their pH level is neutral (not acidic or alkaline).

  • Visual appearance alone is not enough to determine whether lime should be applied.
    • A soil test for pH is best.  Home test kits are available as well as professional testing.
    • When testing soil pH, take samples from several areas of the lawn and mix them together.
    • If the pH level is less than 5.5, lime should be applied.  Working towards an ideal pH allows for optimal nutrient absorption.

When to apply lime to your lawn:

  • Fall is recommended because lime treats soil, not grass
  • Lime prepares the lawn for the next growing season
  • Should be applied before the first frost
  • Should be applied when the lawn is not being treated with any other product/chemical (herbicide, fertilizer, etc…)
