Starting a Pond

Starting a Pond
If somebody has never had a pond before, and they’re just starting one right now what’s that process like? How long does that usually take? Education is the first step. We teach them about the different types of fish, how much room they need, because koi fish prefer a larger pond than goldfish do. Goldfish are a little easier to grow in ponds or than koi are. We’re trying to match them up if they’re just learning. They’re just getting started, we’re going to lean them into the goldfish a little bit more than the koi.
Koi have incredible colors; neon, yellows, white, and some of them actually have a metallic fleck under their scales. There are a lot of options in the koi fish color wise that aren’t available in the goldfish, but the goldfish do stay a little bit smaller. So, you know each one has place and so that’s our job to educate the customers.
Then we’ll talk about with them with about filter systems to make sure that they the water stays clean for the fish as well. One of the main questions we’ll ask owners is how long and how wide is your pond in feet? Like a 10 by 10, that would be a hundred square feet. We want to get you somewhere around 100 total inches of fish in that pond. That’s about the maximum load you would want. Now remember, if you start with five-inch fish, they’re going to grow, so we want to leave room for growth. Now the better your filter system is there’s always exceptions to every rule. The better your filter system is, the more fish you can handle in that same volume of water. The less quality your filter system is, the less fish you’re going to be able to handle in that same area. We also test water for free.
If somebody’s a new pond owner, I know a lot of people now are buying properties that have ponds, and the person that filled it understood it, but they don’t. We can educate you on how to take care of that, so it’s the least amount of work. There are certain things you can do at certain times the year that’ll really cut down on the amount of maintenance you have to do to the pond, and that’s really important to do those things at those times at the specific times of the year. Starts with education.
That knowledge is crucial because you’re going to can beat your head against the wall doing the wrong thing, never changing the results That’s why we test the water, that helps us know where you’re at. And then we ask information about how big the pond is and a lot of times they just look at me like deer in the headlights when I ask them how many how many feet wide is the pond and how deep is it? Those are the things that are really important to help us help you. Get all that information together and then stop out at Rohr’s and you can get questions answered.
