Why Aren’t Your Tomatoes Producing More?

Bev in Plain Township wants to know, “our tomato plants this year are going crazy. They’re between six and seven feet tall. They are huge. We can’t even stake them anymore. However, we don’t have as many tomatoes as we normally do, lots of foliage but not a lot of tomatoes. What’s going on?”
I definitely would say it still may be some lack of phosphorus in the soil. You can use a fertilizer on that, it will help. Honestly, I’m just now starting to get ripe tomatoes. I’ve talked to a lot of people, they’ve been kind of slow this year.
I basically am where I am now that I would normally be about a few weeks to a month ago. I’m having tomatoes that are just coming on and ripening up, so they could just be a little bit late this year. It’s been an interesting year weather-wise and that’s definitely having an effect on everything. Especially soil nutrients and over watering, and it’s been so hot and then it’s been so rainy. It sounds like you’re doing everything right, and flowers will eventually come on.
I think a lot of it is weather related. I hate to keep going back to that, but I’ve talked to several people that have had the same issue. We’re witnessing the same things. Just a late year for a lot of things.
If you fertilize, I like the Big Bloom by Fox Farm. It’s really good because it’s more for blooming, then it’s not gonna push more of that vegetative growth. It’s gonna give it more flowers. Definitely won’t hurt.
