Re-Seeding Your Lawn and Adding Straw

We’re looking at reseeding now that it’s getting cooler. I mean, if we get some rain or rain in the forecast, we can call for that. And we’ve had a lot of customers working on their yards, trying to get them back into the shape that they want them to be in.

When they come in and they buy seed this time of year, it’s very, very, very important that they understand that once you start to water that area, it is imperative that you do it daily, sometimes multiple times a day, depending on how much sun that’s in.

Remember, when that seed germinates, its root system is only an eighth or a quarter of an inch long. If the top quarter inch of soil dries out, it dies, and you have to start all over. And starting over means raking up that hard ground, so it creates a lot of work.

A lot of people also ask where they can get straw bales. We have straw, and we have mini straw and regular straw. And if you’re over-seeding or spot-seeding some places in your yard, we sell bags of straw as well if you don’t need a lot.

We have a new type of straw that has a tachifier built into it, which is basically something that if you spread that straw down, it’s like, for lack of a better analogy, like Elmer’s glue. Once you get it wet, it sticks itself together and stays put through some of the windstorms. For anywhere you’re on a slope, it’s good to have something like that to help keep everything in place.
