Trees & Fall Decor at the Nursery in Early October

orange mum flowers

We have Mums and just everything fall. The bi-color mums, they’re like in a patio pot, and they’re about 14 inches. But there’s three mums in there, and as they grow, they basically almost look like one big mum. It looks like an ice cream cone, all marbled together. But there’s just a ton of them.

And there are the pumpkins. The pumpkins are all there ready to go. We have lots of pie pumpkins, carving pumpkins. What’s the difference between a carving pumpkin and a pie pumpkin? Really, it’s just a size.

Honestly, I think you could make a pumpkin pie out of like a carving one.The carving one’s bigger because you want to make a face on it, and you probably could technically carve a pie pumpkin.

There aren’t as many seeds in a pie pumpkin as well, but they are perfect for baking or just sitting around and decorating with them. And looking cute. They work really good in planters, too. We have two different sizes of pie pumpkins.

Some are a little bit smaller and some are a little bit bigger. But we use them a lot in planters with the gourds and stuff. I can imagine. Yeah, I was just going to say that. And different sizes, too. We have four-inch mums all the way up to really giant ones.

And trees! We have some Japanese maples. I think we brought in about 1,400 pieces last week and got the nursery really looking fresh and sharp.  There’s tons of redbuds and dogwoods and crabapples and maples and oaks. I mean, if it’s out there, we have it. And now’s a good time to plant trees.

We’re doing a lot of our large tree plantings this time of year. You really want to soak that soil really well when you plant it. But remember, when the top of the plant goes dormant, because we’re going to get cold here in the next month, when the top goes dormant, the roots grow for four to six weeks after that happens.

So it’s a great time to get the trees and shrubs in the ground, let them get established with their root system, and then in the spring you’re going to get a much better top on that plant.

Yeah, that’s always a good thing. And usually a lot of the things that are like spring bloomers, you know, it’s ready when it wakes up, it’s going to be at your house. That’ll be exciting.
