More Poinsettia Care Tips & Watering

red poinsettias in pots

We have a LOT of Poinsettias. They’re beautiful and they’re on sale right now, so that’s a great time to come in. They make a great centerpiece, or  something you want to take for a party or a get-together.

A lot of times when you do get a poinsettia like at a grocery store or something like that, you’re not getting a sleeve, which protects it when it goes out when it’s this cold. You need to protect it from the cold and everything, so we make sure we put a sleeve over top of it, protect it from the wind to get it home. Helps it retain the heat there.

They’re from Mexico, so they’re very cold sensitive. We put those sleeves around them to make sure they make the transport home without getting stressed and causing problems. With the cold that we’ve got it can happen really quick like, you know a draft or something can kind of fry the leaves.

It’s amazing how they can perk back up after letting them completely dry out. We almost let them get to the point of wilting at the Nursery. It is very easy to over water now. So when you water them, just give them a good drink, make sure it goes through the bottom of the pot, and then dry out again.

If you’re doing tray watering, you just want to make sure it’s not standing in water. You can water it that way, you just want to make sure it’s wicking up enough to give it a good drink. It will draw it up, but take it out and let that excess water drain away, we don’t want too much moisture to sit into the root system.

And we’ve even had that happen at the nursery where somebody sees something they say ‘oh It’s really dry,’ which it is, and then they water it and somebody else waters it after.
