Landscape & Garden Tasks For June in Northeast Ohio

Summer’s here! Time for tomatoes, pollinators, watering and weeding.
In the Garden
-
Use REPELS-ALL to deter grazing critters.
-
Use COPPER FUNGICIDE and remove any infected leaves. As the temperatures warm, keep an eye out for powdery mildew. There is no cure, only prevention. Spray in morning or early evening. NEVER in the middle of the day or when temperatures are above 80°.
-
Pinch off basil flowers as they begin to set. This keeps the flavor in the leaves and allows the plant to bush out. When herbs begin to flower, their energy is directed towards flower production and can often create a “bitter” taste.
- Late June: Watch out for Japanese Beetles! They love to feast on roses and dark-leafed plants such as Sand Cherry, Ninebark and Purple Beech.
In the Landscape
-
Fertilize newly planted trees, shrubs and perennials with ROHR’S ALL SEASON.
-
Water your plants, especially the newly planted ones.
-
Weed those beds!
Tips for Tomatoes
-
Stake or cage plants BEFORE it’s too late!
- Remove suckers as they appear. Those are stems that grow at a 45° angle between a vertical stem and leafy stem.
-
Remove bottom few leaves: this helps prevent soil/water borne diseases.
-
DO NOT water the foliage. Water at the base of the plant, preferably in the morning!
- Mulch with straw to help retain moisture and discourage weeds.
-
Fertilize with FOX FARM GROW-BIG AND BIG BLOOM.
- Supplement with FOX FARM CAL-MAG to prevent blossom end-rot (begin using as soon as flowering begins). Great for peppers and eggplant too!
National Pollinator Month
-
Plant native species to attract pollinators and butterflies.
- Honey bees love the tiny flowers of Calamint, Nepeta, and ornamental varieties of herbs such as basil, oregano, mint and thyme.
-
Refrain from spraying insecticides on plants that are in bloom. If you must spray, do so in the evening after the honeybees have gone to bed.
