Fertilizer and Plant Questions

The number one thing you can always do for a plant is give it that all season fertilizer. That’s going to help any plant that’s struggling, or even one that’s not and you just want to flush some growth on and keep it healthy. Fertilizing the plant is kind of like us taking vitamin C or a multivitamin. A lot of times the plants don’t always have all the nutrients they need in the soil, or the nutrients that was there has been used up over the last several years.

Farmers rotate their crops, but we can’t do that in our landscape planning. It’s very important that we put the ingredients back in the soil that the plant needs to be successful. That all season fertilizer definitely does that for the whole year. Most fertilizers last four to six weeks, ours lasts six months. The cost on that fertilizer is the same as the four-to-six-week fertilizer, so you’re really getting a good value.

There are always new species of plants that come out every year, and we’re always testing the boundaries of what we can grow here. When people aren’t sure of what’s wrong with their plants, taking a picture will really help. Sometimes you can’t really explain it the way you want to explain it. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, it’s worth a million words in our business. Occasionally we can see something in that picture that you wouldn’t even think to describe, and we can tell what’s going on with it just from the picture. If you’re having a problem with a plant, like an evergreen plant, where it’s going from green to brown, like half of the cutting that you would take off of it to bring in would be green, the other half would be brown. That’s going to help us figure out what’s going on. A lot of times if you bring in a totally brown stem, it’s so far gone, we can’t tell what caused it.
