Lawns grow best when their pH level is neutral (not acidic or alkaline).
- Visual appearance alone is not enough to determine whether lime should be applied.
- A soil test for pH is best. Home test kits are available as well as professional testing.
- When testing soil pH, take samples from several areas of the lawn and mix them together.
- If the pH level is less than 5.5, lime should be applied. Working towards an ideal pH allows for optimal nutrient absorption.
When to apply lime to your lawn:
- Fall is recommended because lime treats soil, not grass
- Lime prepares the lawn for the next growing season
- Should be applied before the first frost
- Should be applied when the lawn is not being treated with any other product/chemical (herbicide, fertilizer, etc…)
