Big Boy Tomatoes Aren’t Getting Big!

Fred in North Canton asks, “My tomatoes are just small, they’re not getting big. They’re all big boys, and I don’t understand what’s going on as far as the size of it.”
I’m not exactly sure why, but I can tell you we’ve talked about it with several people. It’s been a weird year for tomatoes. I’m still waiting. I have a lot of green, and they’re just not coming on. It’s been a weird year for vegetables. I had an early girl tomato plant, I’ll get them in July, but I mean I didn’t get anything from that until August.
I hate to just blame it on the environment, but I feel like that’s what’s going on. I don’t know what it is, necessarily. Adding calcium to your soil is always a good idea. That does help with fruit formation. Adding that calcium to the soil is a good thing to do because they use a lot of it when they’re developing their fruit.
With the size though, it could just be something going on with that, but I would add calcium to the soil, like a Cal Mag. It’s a liquid with calcium and magnesium, and it does help with fruit formation and that kind of thing. That’s what you would do if you see rot and that kind of stuff, but it does help to form fruit.
I don’t think it’s anything you’re doing wrong to be honest, I think it’s just something’s going on environmentally.
