Caring For Your Indoor Houseplants in February

With this cold, I do want to mention to keep house plants away from the drafty areas and make sure none of the leaves are touching the windows. A lot of times those windows can be extremely cold, and that can cause browning and stuff on the leaves.

People may have an area where they always have indoor house plants and keep them, but in this weather the draft that comes in can be detrimental. I have a sunroom, but it’s kind of drafty even in there. But I moved them into the main part of the house just because it’s too cold out there. This is the first time I’ve ever had to do that. Even opening that door just for a minute or so can bring that draft in and certain things like pothos and philodendron, they’re just like no.

This is also the time when you start to kind of notice some pests and diseases, like mealy bugs and scale. So just kind of inspect your house plants, make sure there’s nothing on. There’s a good systemic granular, which is what you put in the soil as a preventative. It’s probably about time to do a second application now. We usually recommend doing it when you bring them in, so it is okay to overlap them a little bit. That way it’s still in the system.

That made me think of something else, nothing to do with landscaping or plants, but furnace filters. Your furnace is running a lot right now, so making sure those filters are fresh and new, it creates less back tension on the air coming through. The furnace works more efficiently and you surely don’t want it to break right now.
