Dealing with Indoor Houseplants over the Winter

What about house plants, anything anyone should be doing with plants that they’ve moved in for the winter?

Just keep an eye out for pests and water when it’s dry. With the heat running and that kind of thing, it tends to get a little bit drier and dry out a little bit quicker than you would think. But plants do go through a resting period. Even though they’re still holding their leaves, house plants go through a little dormancy. Right now, it’s kind of a good time to just kind of let them rest and not do too much fertilizing or anything.

I have a fir, it’s on a 4-foot-high plant pedestal because the branches are going all the way down to the floor. That thing will just keep growing and growing and growing, They tend to like a lot of water and humidity. I spray that one a lot. They are ones that benefit from getting misted, especially in the dry heat that we have in the wintertime.

A moisture meter is something that could help you monitor the dirt, but honestly, I’ve never really used them. I think they do have to be kind of down pretty far because you do want to make sure you’re just giving it a good drink. So as long as you are making sure it’s dry and then the water is going through with the bottom of the pot and allowing it to dry out in between, usually you’re good.
