Early September Plant Update at the Nursery

portage waterfall

So with the cooler weather, we are ramping up for fall sales. We have probably over a thousand pieces coming in this week just to get everything, you know, freshened up a little bit, did a lot of trimming, a lot of fertilizing the last couple of weeks, just trying to get us to where we want to be.

perennial hibiscus pink

There’s some tropicals in there and there’s a lot of perennials. There’s the perennial hibiscus that comes back every year. That big purple leaf, white flower, that one comes back, it does die to the ground in the winter. Or you trim it back to the ground in the spring, but then it comes back from the root system and gets bigger and bigger every season. And it’s one of those that has 10 inch diameter flowers.

They do need full sun. It is one of those ones that can take a wetter area. I’ve seen them growing along the water’s edge and that kind of stuff. It doesn’t have to, but it’s something that can take that.

coral bells multicolored

You’re looking at the Heuchera or coral bells here, and it’s just a nice mix of colors. They do really well in the shade. There are some varieties that will also grow in the sun, but they are going to require more watering. I have some that are in full sun and they get kind of bleached out, especially this time of year. That’s just a really good thing for shade.

ornamental grasses

Lots of ornamental grass, it’s the time of the year for those. They look beautiful. We’ve got some that only get a foot or two tall and then we’ve got some that’ll get eight to twelve feet tall. So, I mean, all different sizes in between as well.

first mums of the season

Here are our first mums of the season. We’re just getting ready to fire up and do the early blooming, mid blooming, late blooming mums.

When do you really want to get them? And I mean, you can get them now, get each different one. A hundred percent. That way you’re staggering your bloom time all around the house and around the garden.

So we’re really starting to make that switch to fall.
