Fraser Fir Christmas Trees and Keeping Needles On

Let’s talk about the trees. I know folks are taking time to figure out what kind of tree they want and everybody’s buying their tree. We have Fraser firs, they are the most fragrant. It’s got two-tone needles, white on the bottom and green on top.
We buy our trees from Smith Evergreen, so I feel terrible for what happened to him down there. They got taken for about a semi load of trees. That is a local company that we also support. It takes them seven to ten years to produce those trees depending on the size, so I know how much work, time, and blood sweat and tears goes into growing those trees.
And I appreciate those guys and how hard they work to make us have the nicest Christmas trees around. And they’re cut fresh. That’s huge.
Sometimes stuff coming out of Canada or other places in the country, it’s cut a month ago, and so that tree is already hyper dehydrated. That’s why having a product like Prolong that we sell at the nursery helps. Ours are fresh cut so they still have a lot of moisture content in the tree, and that Prolong encourages that tree to drink water. And the more it drinks water, the longer the needles stay on the tree.
It’s very important when we put a fresh cut on it or when you put a fresh cut on it at home that you get it in water within an hour before that sap has a chance to harden, and that will allow it to drink. You want to cut at least an inch off the bottom of the trunk so you open those pores back up. When you put the fresh cut on it, you get it in water within an hour and it drinks, it’ll hold its needles until mid- January.
It’s really important to not let the stand run dry, because what happens is, if you forget to check it one morning before you go to work and that stand runs dry, that sap hardens and then it doesn’t want to drink anymore. Just check it every morning and make sure that that stand is topped off with water. Having a little larger stand is nice because you’re gonna hold more moisture, and so you don’t have to fill it as often.
Don’t forget that tree bag for easy clean up, too!
