Gardening Myths #2 – Will Adding Lime to Your Lawn Remove Moss?

grassy lawn

Another myth we found is that lime will remove moss from your lawn.

It’s usually a soil compaction problem and a sunlight problem. It’s an environmental problem that causes the moss to grow so aggressively in the yards.

A lot of the stuff that’s like the granular weed killers, they’re acid-based. Sometimes if the yard is too acidic, it causes the moss to grow. So, you can use lime to bring up the pH and it’ll prevent the moss from having a good environment to grow in.

Again, we’re really more affecting the environment, but the compacted soil is the number one reason it grows. So core aeration in the fall is a really important thing you can do to help keep that soil open and loose, especially if you’re mulching your grass.

A lot of people bag grass. If you’re bagging it and removing it, there’s less organic material down there breaking down. The more times you run your mower over, we’re creatures of habit, so we always run our mowers the same direction in the yard, and so we’re over-compacting the area where those tires are running over and over and over again.
