Getting Dandelions, Chickweed, and Clover Out of Your Lawn

If you’re looking to clean up your lawn, there are chemicals from Bonide that we put down on dandelions, clovers, chickweed, oxalis, the violets and ground ivy, that actually works the best in May, but I do know a lot of guys who do start to apply it now. You can apply it now.
Remember, the plant is drawing energy up from the root system and making that top grow. And when you start to see the dandelions go from yellow to white, that’s when it’s drawing back down into the root system. So that’s the most effective time to have your best likelihood of killing the root system.
There’s a granular that you can put down. If you’re using the granular, it’s imperative that you use it the right way. You have to make sure the ground’s wet from a dew or a rain. You don’t want it to rain for 24 hours. And the reason you want the grass and the weeds wet is so that the powder will stick to the foliage. Now, if you’re using a liquid, all of that’s out the window. You don’t have to worry about that because you’re adding the moisture to make it stick to the foliage. And then, again, you do not want it to rain for 24 hours afterwards.
The granular, you use a spreader. And a lot of times granular is what we’re using if we’re treating an acre. It would be harder to drag a garden hose around and use a liquid on that. But if you’re spot treating, sometimes people would just use a hose end sprayer that hooks to your garden hose where you can put it down.
Those are nice because they pre-mix it. There’s no mixing and it siphons up at the right rate. The biggest thing with those is make sure you shake it up really good before you get started. The other option is sometimes I’ll do it at my house. I’ll put it like a concentrated chemical into a pump sprayer, and I’ll just go around and spot treat. If it’s a large area, one big spot, The granular may be the way to go.
