How Much Rain Is Too Much For Plants

When we get an all-day soaker like this, it generally takes care of the watering for shallow rooted stuff, like some of the young shrubs and perennials. Trees, however, they can have a root system. Sometimes those containers, they’re almost two feet deep and we may not get enough water to get all the way down to the bottom of that root system.

You still really want to check the soil where you’re planting this stuff to make sure it got enough water. With the amount of rain we’re getting though, most of this stuff’s going to be just fine. Just watch it as we do come out of this rainy time, we tend to get complacent. ‘Oh, we don’t have to water’ and then all of a sudden, it’s 80 and breezy, and watering becomes a very important thing. For any first or even second year plants, but mostly first year plants. Really going to have to be watching for water as we get into the warmer months and that temperature change happens.

This is kind of a little reminder of why drainage holes are important with container plants, because the water needs to go somewhere. It needs to get out of there. When we’re getting a lot of rain like this, it can just hold into those plants that don’t have holes at the bottom, and it’ll rot out your plants.

We’ve actually drilled a few pots this year that came in from the manufacturer, where they’re pushing them out of these factories so fast. Whatever happened for whatever reason some of the pots came in without drain holes drilled, and it looked like their drill bit malfunctioned. We ended up having to drill drain holes in, and we always make sure that we’re keeping an eye on that type of stuff to make sure that when the customer takes it home, they’re going to be successful with it.

Really watch your roses though. Fungus is going to be an issue on roses, and there are certain perennials that like to fungus up when we have a lot of high humidity, cool temperatures. They’re going to get fungus on them, and it’s easy to control, it’s just one of the things you want to be aware of. So just keep an eye on them, if you start to see something that doesn’t look right on the leaves, you’re more than welcome bring a picture in here to the nursery. Let one of us look at it and we can guide you to the right way to control the problem.

We were talking earlier about you know, don’t let the rain dampen our spirits, but this is probably not the time to put weed killer down or any of that kind of stuff. It’s not going to be as effective if you do it now. There’s the right time, and we’re going to have some nice cool weather coming up where we’re not going to get in some rain. That’s the perfect time to apply it, also with insecticides and fungicides that we’re going to be putting on plants We really don’t want to apply that in a rain.

We do want cooler weather to apply that, so it looks like we’re going to have some of that coming.
