How to Deal With Late Season Crabgrass & Prevention

I do have an email here, and this is from David in North Canton. David says, ‘a large section of my yard was reseeded recently. A lot of what appears to be creeping bent grass came up in that area. I’m concerned that it will take over the yard. How do I get rid of it? Should I do it myself or hire a pro?’

First thing first. I guess it depends on how big the area is for the professional or how big of the area you want to tackle. This year has been rough with a lot of invasive grass and weeds popping up in yards. I mean, I can’t tell you everybody that calls us right now at the store is just like, hey, I have crabgrass. Hey, I have this popping up right now. There’s not much you can do right now. The best that you can do is, you know, get ahead of it with pre-emergent or something like that. Preen, snapshot, things like that that you can like get ahead of the curve. But honestly, at this point in the year, it’s kind of a tough situation at this point. There’s not much else that you can do for this year.

Whether you go with a professional and do it yourself does depend on the size, how big it is, it’s your whole yard. You’re like, OK, I probably want to call somebody about this. But we have specialists that are really great with that kind of stuff. So, I mean, they can feel free to stop in and call us and we can definitely help them out.

It is an annual grass. So that grass will die off, but the seeds will remain there. So that’s why it’s important to do a pre-emergent. But you don’t want to do a pre-emergent when you’re reseeding your lawn. That is important ,because that will stop the seed from growing. So you can reseed now. I mean, you can if it’s just a smaller patch, you can pull that out. And now is a great time to actually reseed the lawn. Get that out and reseed now and fertilize with milorganite or something like that. You don’t want to push a lot of new growth, but that will help it. And then pre-emergent in the spring will prevent those seeds from germinating and prevent them from coming back.

So it is an annual grass, something to look for next spring to get it taken care of. I know it’s unsightly now, but you want to deal with it too much longer. Soon there will be snow over it.
