In-Store Discount Section at Rohr’s

We want to talk about our discount section and stuff we have going on here.

June is perennial planting month, so now is the time, we’ve got like just getting tons and tons of trucks in, and so when we talk about our discount section, the stuff that’s in there just passed its bloom cycle.

There’s not really anything wrong with this, It’s just out of its bloom cycle, and so we want to turn it out of there. It’s a great way to get product at a very inexpensive price.

I actually like to call it the adoption section more or less to be honest, because a lot of it is just stuff that needs to go in the ground and needs a home.

Next year it’s gonna look just like it did, you know we’ve all gotten stuff out of this section, and I can’t tell the difference between that after the next season. It’s just stuff that doesn’t look as good as the other stuff, and it just gets pulled from the table and goes back.

We’ve got a ton of stuff in the tree and shrub discount section as well, and same thing. When we buy plants there’s a spring crop, and there’s a summer crop. They don’t match.

They’re the same plant, but they’re different sizes. So a lot of times we’ll get down to one or two left from that first crop, and it’s just not gonna sell because people come in and they want  three that look the same.

So those plants end up down there in the discount section. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with them. It’s a great way to get a plant generally around half off of what the plant normally would have cost.If you’re only looking for one of this or two of that, it’s a great way to landscape around the house on the cheap.

We have a lot of natives as well, I have a really big native and pollinator section in the perennials. A lot of people have been asking about natives lately, which is a great thing. It’s very important, and it’s nice because natives are acclimated to our climate. They’re used to our winters, and are going to be food sources for our local pollinators.

There’s a whole list of the nursery that we’ve put together for hummingbirds and butterflies. Deer resistant is another thing, we do have a good deer resistant perennial list.

When we say deer resistant, you need to understand they’re not deer proof if a deer is starving. It’ll eat a real thorny barberry if it comes to it. Right now there are other things you can do to try to reduce the deer from being an issue in the garden. A product like Repels-All, which is a granular that  irritates their nose and their eyes, and so they generally stay away from that area. But there are no guarantees. It’s just it’s not the first thing on the menu that they want to eat.

They’re going to like hostas, and there’s certain types of hydrangea that they go after as well. They prefer the macrophylla over the oak leaves. With the high moisture content in the buds and the leaves, it’s definitely easier for them to eat and get more nutrients out of those.

We do still have a lot going on in the greenhouse, we’re still getting a lot of house plants and that kind of thing. We’re starting to weigh down on the veggies and annuals, it’s amazing how quick it goes. The tropicals and perennials are still coming in. The perennial section is quite packed.
