Little Lime Punch Hydrangeas as a Statement Shrub Line

little lime punch hydrangeas in front of the nursery

The Little Lime Punch are beautiful in front of our store on Portage. Out of all of them It’s probably one of the most unique because it doesn’t bloom all at once like most things do. Those flowers, they just hold that color for such a long time.

But one of the cool things about little lime punches, these are planted in full sun mind you, I mean from light to dark. There’s no shade out there by Portage. We do have irrigation on them. So that does help keep them watered.

And the reason we use that specific variety, one, we can keep it trimmed so it doesn’t go above the second split rail, so it doesn’t block off any part of the nursery. But secondly, we use that size or that variety of plant was not just for the size, we used it because the bloom time is staggered. And what that means is not all the buds and the blooms develop at the same time.

So you’ll look at those plants up close, and you see all the blooms that are opened up, and they’re pure white. They’re like that for about two weeks. And then about 50% of the plant is going to turn half pink, half white.  And then at the very end, they dry a raspberry color. So sometimes when blooms dry, they dry brown or tan, and they’re not technically attractive. This one actually dries a raspberry color.

The cool thing about this plant is it’ll have some blooms that are pure white, some blooms that are half pink, half white, and some blooms that are raspberry. So it’s like a marbled multicolor, and it keeps that coloring like that for quite some time. There’s 150 of them out there, so there’s a lot.

Something to keep in mind for your landscaping!
