New Plants – The New Gen Freedom Boxwood

We’re going to be talking a lot about new products coming out. So we’ve got a lot of new plant species that have been introduced in this last year, and we wanted to talk a little bit about some of the new introductions from last year, and how did they do? Were they everything we thought they were gonna be?
One of the newest exciting things that was introduced last year was a boxwood called freedom. Freedom is a disease and blight resistant boxwood. If you’re gonna plant something, why not plant something that’s not gonna get something to begin with? That eliminates the need for spraying for wood blight, and this new gen freedom boxwood and another one called little missy boxwood are boxwood blight resistant.
New gen freedoms even have a bit of a leaf miner resistance. So you’re not just affecting it on the blight side, but you are planting a plant that’s gonna be insect resistant as well. These guys plant football fields full of different boxwoods when they’re doing their testing, and then they actually spread the blight all over the field and see which ones live, take those, propagate them, and do it again and again. They’ve got a strain of boxwood that is highly, highly resistant now. And it takes a lot of years of work to get to that point. They stay a little bit shorter as well. They’re trying to breed things to be a little bit tighter recently.
Check out the new gen freedom boxwoods at our stores this spring, and add some hardy, disease resistant shrubs to your landscaping.
