Newer Varieties of Later-Blooming Dogwoods

Everybody wants something that’s the same, but different. So I want a flowering tree, but I don’t want what everybody else has. And that’s where these new dogwoods and new redbuds really come in to shine. Like some of the new dogwoods.

There’s some new varieties of pink and white dogwoods that flower two weeks later. Why is that important? Here in Ohio, a lot of times early on in the spring, we have a lot of frost or really cold nights or even freezes. And if that dogwood flower opens up, it’s going to spoil that flower.

If it flowers two weeks later, a lot of times you’re missing most of those cold nights that would spoil a flower. And so having a dogwood that flowers a couple of weeks later is a huge advantage. The other thing they’ve done through breeding is they have a dogwood now that’ll grow in full sun.

Most dogwoods are a part sun kind of a tree. Well, the hybrid dogwoods can grow in full sun or part sun. So they’ve expanded its zone where it’s going to be healthy and happy, basically.

That’s kind of where they have done a lot of the breeding and stuff because a lot of people want stuff with a lot of color. Well, things naturally don’t bloom for a really long time. So the leaf color and like a new flush of growth, like the red buds and stuff, that’s something else to add a new different kind of color other than a flower.

There aren’t, to my knowledge, not really any shrubs that flower year round because we have a winter time. So everything has to be dormant for a certain period of time when it’s growing outside. Now there are long flowering shrubs, but nothing like an annual.
