Part of My Lawn is a Different Color, What Should I Do?

We’ve got Marilyn in Jackson Township, who says, ‘We have green grass. Recently, in the last month, we’ve developed this big different color green patch, probably three feet by nine feet or so. Now it looks like it’s dying. What can we do? You know, last year it was green.”
All right. I’d like you to bring a picture of the area in a sample of the lighter colored green grass. I’d like to take a look at it so I could answer that more accurately. But there are some annual pods and some other things that can germinate in the spring and grow. And they’re very aggressive and quick growing. But in the heat of summer, they generally don’t like this extremely hot heat with not enough moisture.
And so they do have a tendency to brown out. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, I don’t think there’s a lot of over-the-counter stuff that you can spray on that’s going to kill that, but not also kill the bluegrass perennial rye and fescues, which is what our yards and lawns up here are made out of. I do think commercially there’s some stuff available that our lawn guys are allowed to apply, but I don’t believe there’s anything that a residential homeowner can buy and apply.
And depending on what it is, you might be able to just kind of reseed over it and put fresh on that. If it’s a small area, depending on how large of an area we’re talking about, that’s why the picture and the actual grass itself will help. You could spray that area with some Roundup, kill that off, rake it out, and then put some fresh seed back in there of the perennial rye, bluegrass, and fescue, and then it’ll thicken back up and match the rest of the grass that’s there.
You can stop into either Roars Nursery location, the 5357 Everhard Road in Canton, or the 7211 Portage Street in Massillon. Bring a sample and a picture, and I just want to make sure that I’m recommending the right thing, and seeing those two things will definitely help us make sure we got you on the right track. They’ll fix you up.
