Using Rohr’s Fertilizer to Boost Annuals and Planters

If you’re buying that plant you want, the nice thing about Rohr’s nursery is a lot of our staff has got 10, 12, 15, 20, 30 years of experience and those people that you’re talking to are gonna give you that information They’re gonna say hey look, you can literally water this every day for an hour a day, and you’re not gonna hurt this plant.
Or they’re gonna say you really need to dig down in the mulch, grab a handful of the soil, and we’ll teach you how to check and make sure there’s enough moisture in the soil. And if there’s not, then you’re gonna have to add some water to it. We also have our own custom blended fertilizer that’s designed to release over a six month time frame.
Everybody’s pretty good about when they initially plant something, watering it and fertilizing it. Most fertilizers, the granules are designed to be gone in about four to six weeks. Well, that’s just about the time you’re starting to think the plant isn’t new and you get distracted doing other stuff.
Our fertilizer, you put it in the ground when you plant, and it’s good for the year. We mix it right in the potting soil when we do custom annual planters, because it’s continuously feeding. The nice thing about it being such a slow release is you can also use a liquid fertilizer with it, like a miracle grow or a bloom booster.
I use the analogy that the liquid fertilizer is kind of like a Red Bull, just gives it a ton of energy. But there’s not a lot of staying power. It’s gone in five to seven days completely. That granular fertilizer is always releasing a little bit, so even when you may forget to do a liquid fertilizer, that granular is always still releasing. So it’s the best of both worlds.
We do recommend that for annuals especially, because they’re such a high bloomer and we have such a short period with them. They’re using a lot of energy and a lot of that food. So that’s really what we recommend doing and we are constantly fertilizing as we’re watering. We have like the greenhouse on basically an IV. We have a siphon so they’re always just getting a little bit of fertilizer every time.
It helps keep your annuals, your hanging baskets, and planters well fed. If you’re just using regular water, you’re continually running the nutrients out of that. They’re using it and some of it is leaching out of the soil. It’s important to put it back in and use the combination of the two. The nice thing about the granular fertilizer, the stuff that we have made for ourselves, it’s one of the best fertilizers that you can’t buy anywhere else.
There’s no additional cost to the products, so why not use the stuff that’s gonna last for six months? The first year we brought it in I think we moved a little over a ton of that fertilizer. Last year we moved seven tons. So that product, when you have that type of result in a few short years, the customers that are using that are seeing the results. They’re coming back and instead of buying the five-pound bag, they’re buying the 10-pound bag or the 15 pound bag because they know that it works. They saw it firsthand.
